Survodutide vs mazdutide

Survodutide and mazdutide belong to the same class: both are once-weekly peptides that activate the glucagon receptor and the GLP-1 receptor 1,2. Survodutide is investigational, with phase 3 results published in 2026, while mazdutide was approved in China in 2025 1,3. Neither had a Drugs@FDA application record when queried on 24 October 2026 4,5. No trial comparing them directly was identified 6,7.

Survodutide: what the data says

Survodutide's phase 3 programme covers obesity with and without type 2 diabetes and liver disease, funded by Boehringer Ingelheim 1,10,11.

  • In SYNCHRONIZE-1 (725 adults without diabetes; human data), mean body-weight change at 76 weeks was -12.2% and -13.0% in the two dose groups vs -5.4% with placebo 1.
  • In SYNCHRONIZE-2 (752 adults with type 2 diabetes; human data), the change was -8.2% and -9.8% vs -3.9%, and HbA1c fell by 0.8 to 0.9 percentage points vs 0.2 10.
  • In a phase 2 trial in biopsy-confirmed MASH (293 participants; human data), improvement in MASH without worsening of fibrosis occurred in 43% to 62% of survodutide groups vs 14% with placebo 17.

Mazdutide: what the data says

Mazdutide's phase 3 trials were conducted in China and funded by Innovent Biologics; a US phase 2 trial was funded by Eli Lilly 2,14.

  • In GLORY-1 (610 adults; human data), mean body-weight change at 48 weeks was -11.00% and -14.01% vs +0.30% with placebo 2.
  • In GLORY-2 (461 adults with obesity; human data), the change at 60 weeks was -16.65% vs -1.50% 12.
  • In type 2 diabetes (human data), mazdutide lowered HbA1c compared with placebo and with dulaglutide 18,19.

Key research differences

  • Regulatory status: mazdutide is approved in China, whereas survodutide has no approval identified; neither had a Drugs@FDA record on 24 October 2026 3,4,5.
  • Liver-disease evidence: survodutide has a published phase 3 trial in MASLD and a phase 2 biopsy trial in MASH, whereas the mazdutide sources reviewed report a MASH trial only as registered 7,11,17.
  • Trial geography: mazdutide's published phase 3 trials enrolled Chinese adults, whereas survodutide's SYNCHRONIZE-2 was multinational 2,10,12.
  • Pharmacokinetic reporting: a phase 1b half-life range is published for mazdutide, while no numeric human half-life for survodutide was located 9.
  • Placebo-group change: placebo groups in SYNCHRONIZE-1 lost 5.4% of body weight vs a 0.30% gain in GLORY-1, showing how differently these trials performed 1,2.

Where the evidence is limited

No head-to-head trial was identified 6,7. The trials differ in length (76 weeks vs 48 to 60 weeks), population, lifestyle co-interventions and placebo response, so the figures cannot be ranked 1,2,12. Each programme was funded by its developer 1,2.

Frequently asked questions

Are survodutide and mazdutide the same type of drug?
Yes, in terms of receptor targets: both are dual glucagon and GLP-1 receptor agonists given once weekly 1,2. They are different molecules from different developers 8,9.
Does survodutide lead to more body-weight change than mazdutide?
That cannot be determined. No trial has compared them, and their phase 3 trials differ in duration, population and placebo response 1,2,6.
Is either approved?
Mazdutide was approved in China in 2025 3. Neither had a Drugs@FDA application record on 24 October 2026, and survodutide is described as investigational in its 2026 phase 3 reports 1,4,5.
