What Hexarelin is
A synthetic hexapeptide growth hormone secretagogue acting at the ghrelin receptor, studied in endocrine and cardiovascular research models.
Hexarelin binds and activates the growth hormone secretagogue receptor (GHS-R), the same receptor used by the endogenous peptide ghrelin, which is how it raises pituitary growth hormone output 3,5. Beyond growth hormone GHS-R is also expressed in heart and blood vessels, and a review of hexarelin's cardiovascular actions describes the non-GHS-R scavenger receptor CD36 as a specific cardiac receptor for hexarelin… How it works →
Key evidence
- Arvat et al., J Clin Endocrinol Metab · 2001 · Humans (7 healthy young men)Hexarelin raised growth hormone, prolactin, ACTH and cortisol; its growth hormone response was smaller than ghrelin's and larger than GHRH's, and it did not modify the response to ghrelin when given together. 5
- Imazio et al., Eur J Heart Fail · 2002 · Humans (8 dilated and 5 ischaemic cardiomyopathy patients, with normal and growth-hormone-deficient comparison groups)Ejection fraction rose in the ischaemic cardiomyopathy group, as in normal subjects, but not in the dilated cardiomyopathy group, despite a similar growth hormone rise in both. 6
- Broglio et al., Eur J Pharmacol · 2002 · Humans (24 men with coronary artery disease during bypass surgery)Hexarelin increased ejection fraction, cardiac index and cardiac output and reduced wedge pressure; GHRH, recombinant growth hormone and placebo produced no haemodynamic effect, indicating the effect was not mediated by circulating growth hormone. 7
What the human evidence shows
We searched PubMed and ClinicalTrials.gov and found no human studies that administered Hexarelin. The research described on its page is from cells or animals, and animal amounts do not translate to people.
How long did human studies run?
No human study durations are recorded for Hexarelin.

Supplies and handling
- Lyophilized vialSealed vial with the freeze-dried cake. Check the label, lot and the certificate of analysis before opening.
- Sterile diluentThe diluent named on the product documentation. Bacteriostatic water contains benzyl alcohol; sterile water does not.
- Graduated syringesSized to the volume being measured. U-100 insulin syringes are graduated in units where 100 units = 1 mL.
- Alcohol prep padsFor wiping vial stoppers before each puncture.
- Nitrile glovesClean gloves for aseptic handling.
- Sharps containerPuncture-resistant container for used needles.
Storage
General research-context handling only. Lyophilised peptide is normally kept cold, dry and shielded from light, with reconstituted solution treated as substantially less stable than the dry powder and repeated freeze-thaw avoided. Defer to the storage temperature, retest date and solvent guidance in the supplier's documentation for the specific lot; no preparation or handling instructions are given here.
- Lyophilized (unmixed) vials: typically stored cold and dry, away from light, as the documentation directs. Many are stable longer frozen.
- Reconstituted vials: typically refrigerated (about 2–8 °C), protected from light and not frozen.
- Bacteriostatic water contains benzyl alcohol, which inhibits bacterial growth in multi-use vials; sterile water has no preservative.
Handling mistakes and troubleshooting
- Added the wrong volume of diluent
- The concentration changes, not the amount of compound in the vial. Recalculate with the volume actually added and relabel the vial.
- Shook the vial and it foamed
- Let it settle in the refrigerator. Foam is a sign of agitation; some peptides aggregate when shaken. Note it on the label.
- The solution is cloudy or has particles
- Do not use it. Cloudiness can indicate incomplete dissolution, contamination or degradation. Record the lot and contact the supplier with the certificate of analysis.
- The powder cake looks melted or shrunken before reconstitution
- This can indicate the vial was exposed to heat or moisture. Record the lot and condition on arrival.
- Liquid sprayed back when the needle was removed
- Pressure built up in the vial. Withdraw a small volume of air while adding diluent to keep pressure neutral.
Regulatory status
- Status
- Hexarelin has no approved drug application in the United States; Drugs@FDA / openFDA searches for both "hexarelin" and "examorelin" return no records 1. It is named in the WADA 2026 Prohibited List, section S2.2.4 2.
- United States (FDA)
- Not approved. Drugs@FDA / openFDA queries for "hexarelin" and "examorelin" return no matching applications 1. No DailyMed human prescribing information corresponds to an approved hexarelin product.
- Sport (WADA)
- Prohibited at all times. Section S2.2.4, "Growth hormone releasing factors, including, but not limited to:", names "examorelin (hexarelin)" among the growth hormone-releasing peptides (GHRPs) 2. Class S2 substances are prohibited in- and out-of-competition and are non-Specified.
