What it is

Melanotan I and afamelanotide are the same 13-amino-acid peptide ([Nle4, D-Phe7]-alpha-MSH). Under the name afamelanotide it is FDA-approved as SCENESSE, a 16 mg subcutaneous implant, for adults with erythropoietic protoporphyria [1, 2]. Research-market Melanotan I is sold as a lyophilized powder and is not the approved product.

Where the evidence is

All controlled human data come from trials of the afamelanotide implant [4]. The full reference entry, including label dosing, adverse events and regulatory status, is on the afamelanotide page.

What is not known

No controlled studies of research-grade lyophilized Melanotan I were found. Purity, identity and stability of research-market material are not established by the approved-drug data.
