What it is

This listing describes a dissolving film strip product sold on the research market. It is marketed as containing paraxanthine, L-theanine, alpha-GPC, huperzine A, vinpocetine and vitamins B3, B9 and B12.

Research context

None of these ingredients is a peptide. Paraxanthine and L-theanine have small trials in healthy adults. Alpha-GPC, huperzine A and vinpocetine were studied mainly in people with Alzheimer's disease or other dementias.

What is not known

A PubMed search found no study of this specific combination or of these ingredients delivered together in a film strip. Interactions between the components have not been reported. Results from dementia populations should not be applied to healthy people. The B vitamins are not reviewed on this page.

Key findings from the literature

Summarized from the abstracts of the references below. Study models are stated so findings are not overgeneralized.

  • In a crossover trial of 13 healthy adults, single paraxanthine intake was associated with better scores on some memory and attention tests 1.
  • In a four-week crossover trial of 30 healthy adults, L-theanine was associated with lower stress-related scale scores and higher verbal fluency scores 2.
  • In a six-month trial of 261 people with mild to moderate Alzheimer's disease, alpha-GPC (choline alfoscerate) was associated with better cognitive scores 3.
  • A meta-analysis of 20 trials in people with Alzheimer's disease reported cognitive score gains with huperzine A; most trials had high bias risk 4.
  • A Cochrane review of three pre-1990s trials in people with dementia judged the evidence for vinpocetine inconclusive and not supportive of clinical use 5.
  • An analysis of 22 supplements labeled as containing huperzine A found that only two contained an amount within 10% of the label claim 6.
